Not My Idea of a Good Time

I want to know how I got on the Sojouners e-mail list, because I don’t ever recall signing up.

Today, the fine folks at Sojourners are invitting me to the Pentecost 2006 shindig here in Mordor-on-the-Potomac, and they are telling me the line up of “inspirational” speakers is just “getting better and better.” Pinch me, I must surely be dreaming. The evangelical Left, such as it is, plans to commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the community of believers by talking about a New Covenant for America, and by listening to the likes of:

  • Sen. Barack Obama
  • Marian Wright Edelman, Founder and President of the Children’s Defense Fund
  • Ambassador Tony Hall, former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Agencies for Food and Agriculture
  • Rev. Sharon Watkins, General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
  • You?

No, not me. Not ever me. The Christian Coalition (or whatever it is called these days) and the Sojourners can worship their various golden calves of “public policy” and sacrifice their children to the Molech that is the state, but I will have no part of it. Nor should anyone else with both a conscience and honest faith in God. I have no desire to participate in workshops, I do not confuse the “prophetic voice” with lobbying government, and am convinced that “leadership” is the problem, and not the solution.

There may be many voices heard that day, much “talking in tongues,” but I suspect very little of it inspired by the Holy Spirit.
